Policy Advising

FIZ Karlsruhe has been involved in policy advising for a number of years, providing its expertise in information infrastructure and the importance of patent information to assist in the development of effective research and technology policy.

Policy Advising on Information Infrastructure:
Duties and functions of Sabine Brünger-Weilandt (President and CEO of FIZ Karlsruhe)

  • Since the end of 2014 she is vice president of the Council for Information Infrastructure which was appointed by the Federal Minister of Education and Research Prof. Wanka
  • Since October 2013 consultant of the EU Commission for the research and innovation programme Horizon 2020 with main focus on "European Research Infrastructures including e-Infrastructures"
  • Since 2012 as one of three experts member of the ad-hoc-working group "Information Infrastructures" formed by the GWK (Joint Science Conference)
  • 2012 Mrs. Brünger-Weilandt joined the German Science Council`s Coordinating Group "Recommendations for the further development of scientific information infrastructure in Germany until 2020"
  • 2009-2011 development of the Overall Concept for the Information Infrastructure in Germany KII:  submitted as scheduled in 2011 to the Joint Science Conference (GWK)
  • Since 2009 chair of the commission "Future for the Information Infrastructure"
  • From 2009 to 2014 she was the committee`s representative of the Leibniz-Association for information infrastructure

FIZ Karlsruhe pursues the goal to expand political consulting on Information Infrastructure on a national and European level.

At federal level:

Since 2008 FIZ Karlsruhe has been involved in the Digital Information Initiative as part of the Alliance of German Scientific Organizations. In addition, FIZ Karlsruhe is actively participating in following positions.

  • Member of the steering committee
  • as co-chairs of the National Hosting Strategies working group
  • as member of the Virtual Research Environments and Research Data working groups

At regional/communal level:

Since 2012 FIZ Karlsruhe is a member of the e-Science-AG belonging to the Ministry of Science, Research and Arts (MWK) in Baden-Württemberg. The Information Infrastructure is in the focus of the working group (AG) as it is represented exemplarily in the KII paper.

  • FIZ Karlsruhe is a member in the working groups "Management of Research Data" and "Virtual Research Environments"

The Importance of Patent Information

Since 2012, FIZ Karlsruhe has been participating at the national level for the first time in the "Innovation Dialogue Between the Federal Government, Business, and Science" organized by Acatech, the German National Academy of Science and Engineering. The Innovation Dialogue features prominent federal officials, including Chancellor Angela Merkel, Federal Minister of Research Johanna Wanka, and Federal Minister of Economics Siegmar Gabriel. It is being used by the federal government as a forum for independent expert discussion on ways to foster successful research and innovation. FIZ Karlsruhe has contributed its specific expertise concerning the importance of patent information in the Asian context, specifically in the form of expert interviews for the dossier "The International Dimension of German Innovation Policy as it Relates to Asia. "The German government plans to continue the Innovation Dialogue in 2014.
