1977

Our company is founded under the name of “Fachinformationszentrum Energie, Physik, Mathematik GmbH“, with a mathematics department in Berlin

1978

INKA Online Service (54 databases in 1983; shut down at the end of 1992 after the databases had been transferred to STN)

1979

The Bonn office  - the producer of our  BINE information services - is opened.

1983

FIZ Karlsruhe and the American Chemical Society (ACS) sign a co-operation agreement governing the foundation of STN International, The Scientific and Technical Information Network.

1984

The first 4 databases are available online via STN International (the world’s first integrated network of online hosts; in 2009: about 200 databases)

1985

ZBMATH online (published together with Heidelberger Akademie der Wissenschaften and Springer-Verlag, Heidelberg/Germany)

ICSD – the crystal structure database is taken over from Bonn University.

1986

STN International acquires a new partner in Japan

ENERGY, INIS and PATDPA online

1987

Our company name is changed to „Fachinformationszentrum Karlsruhe, Gesellschaft für wissenschaftlich-technische Information GmbH“

1988

BEILSTEIN on STN (first factual database on STN; in 2009: 12 factual databases)

Launch of PC-based front end software STN Express

PATGRAPH online (STN is the world’s first provider who displays vector graphs)

25th anniversary of STN International

A framework concept for a scientific information infrastructure in Germany is submitted to the Joint Science Conference of the Federal Government and the Länder (GWK)

The GWK commissions the Leibniz Association to establish an overall concept for Germany. The committee “Kommission Zukunft der Informationsinfrastruktur“ (“The future of the information infrastructure“) is founded.

The line “Leibniz Institute for Information Infrastructure“ is added to our company name.
